Psychoanalysis is a therapeutic clinical practice created in the 19th century. It is one of the primary building blocks of later therapeutic approaches, as it has profoundly influenced the development of contemporary psychotherapies, including psychodynamic approaches and cognitive-behavioral therapies; Most of the founders of later therapies are psychoanalysts.

Psychoanalysis is based on the idea that our conscious thoughts and feelings are largely determined by unconscious impressions and desires, of which we are not only unaware, but which can often be at odds with our conscious beliefs and wants.

The first few analysis sessions will give you an idea about how it is to put what's bothering you into words. Few questions might be put before you.

What brings you to therapy? What is it that your complaining about? For how long? When did it start?

During these initial sessions, we will assess the suitability of a psychoanalytic approach to your needs. Following the preliminary sessions, and upon the decision to proceed, we will establish the frequency and duration of your sessions and start working.

First it might feel akward when someone starts speaking to a stranger about his or her private life, complaints, or even intimate details . But this framework is what is going to the pave the way to a psychoanalytic ground, where a case-by-case perspective based on the premise that each subject is singular and therefore requires a treatment path of their own. For this reason, no two analyses are alike: they differ in content, rhythm, frequency, and duration. The work unfolds through the subject’s free associations, in dialogue with the analyst’s interventions and interpretations.

Sessions are generally 30-45 minutes long, but they can slightly vary in length. Usually you will need to come once or twice a week, although this again depends on your personal circumstances and possibilities. It is important to note that although some people feel a difference after short period of time, analytical treatment takes time. It is not advised to stop before talking to the analyst about it. Things does not usually happen overnight. On the other hand, long-term work may sometimes be unnecessary or unsuited to the specific moment and circumstances.

Initial sessions are offered free of charge.

In the first sessions, fees, methods of payment, and the frequency of sessions are discussed in light of each patient’s individual circumstances. There is no single fee that applies to all.

Cancellation of sessions is to be made 24 hours in advance. Not arriving to a scheduled session, or cancelling without a 24 hour notification in advance, will require covering the full cost of the session according to our agreement. In any other case, sessions can be rescheduled and will not require extra charge.

Traditionally, psychoanalysis has been closely associated with the use of the couch. It was conceived as a way to facilitate free speech, reduce visual distraction, and support the unfolding of unconscious associations. For a long time, the in-person setting — and often the couch — was considered the standard frame of psychoanalytic work.

The global COVID-19 pandemic profoundly disrupted this tradition. Faced with the necessity of physical distancing, psychoanalysts worldwide were compelled to rethink the analytic setting while preserving its ethical and clinical foundations. In response, major psychoanalytic institutions and associations recognized that psychoanalytic work could continue online, provided that confidentiality, regularity, and ethical responsibility were maintained. Contemporary technology has thus offered new means of communication, enabling both individual and collective engagement within the analytic community and making it possible to reach regions such as the Arab world, where access to psychoanalytic work was previously limited.

International organizations such as the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), as well as numerous psychoanalytic schools and clinical bodies across Europe and beyond, officially acknowledged remote psychoanalytic practice as legitimate.

The term psychoanalysis can sometimes be misleading or confusing for those unfamiliar with it. Despite its name, psychoanalysis has nothing to do with analyzing personality or character analysis. Nor is it based on moral judgment, advice, coaching, or mentoring. It does not involve faith, confession, or guidance toward any worldview.

It is not mind-reading or intuition. It does not rely on techniques designed to correct behavior or promote normalization. Rather, it is a clinical practice grounded in speech and listening, within a clear ethical framework.

Note: The decision to speak to an analyst about what worries and troubles us does not necessarily need to be the result of a life crisis.

My clinical practice is guided by the ethical principles of psychoanalysis, which place respect for the subject, confidentiality, and responsibility at the center of the analytic work. Psychoanalysis is founded on a carefully defined framework, jointly agreed upon, within which the analysand is invited to speak freely. The analyst bears full responsibility for maintaining this framework and for ensuring that the analytic relationship is not used for any form of personal, emotional, sexual, or financial exploitation. Strict confidentiality is observed at all times. Ethical abstinence, respect for autonomy, attention to limits, and vigilance regarding conflicts of interest are essential conditions for analytic work.
